Frequently Asked Questions

What is biltong?

Biltong is a traditional Southern African air-dried meat. Quality cuts of beef are marinated, seasoned and slowly air-dried rather than cooked, creating its distinctive flavour and tender texture.

How is your biltong made?

Our biltong is handcrafted in small batches in Feilding using quality New Zealand beef, traditional methods and carefully selected ingredients.

Each batch is marinated, seasoned and slowly air-dried under controlled conditions. Quality comes before volume, and every batch must meet our standards before it carries the Manawatū Biltong name.

How long does it last?

Every vacuum pack is marked with a best-before date.

Unopened biltong should be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and enjoyed by the date shown on the packaging. Once opened, reseal the pack, refrigerate it and enjoy it while fresh.

Does biltong need to be refrigerated?

Unopened packs do not require refrigeration when stored according to the instructions on the packaging.

Once opened, we recommend resealing the pack and refrigerating it to maintain its freshness, flavour and texture.

How should I store my biltong?

  • Keep unopened biltong in its original packaging.
  • Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Once opened, reseal the pack tightly and refrigerate it.
  • Always follow the best-before date and storage instructions on the pack.

What ingredients do you use?

Our recipes vary between flavours.

Our traditional recipe is made using New Zealand beef, malt vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, coriander seeds, Himalayan rock salt, brown sugar and black pepper. Other flavours contain additional seasonings and ingredients.

The complete ingredient and allergen information for each flavour can be found on its product page and packaging.

Is your biltong gluten-free?

No. Our current biltong range is not gluten-free because ingredients used in our recipes contain barley and gluten.

It is not suitable for people with coeliac disease or those who need to avoid barley or gluten. Please check the complete ingredient and allergen statement for the individual flavour before purchasing.

Where is your biltong made?

Every batch is made in Feilding, in the heart of the Manawatū.

How do you ship orders?

We deliver throughout New Zealand using tracked courier services. Orders are packed with care and dispatched as quickly as possible.

Tracking information will be provided once your order has been dispatched.

How long does delivery take?

Estimated delivery times after dispatch are:

  • North Island: 1–3 business days
  • South Island: 2–4 business days
  • Rural delivery: allow an additional 1–2 business days

These are courier estimates rather than guaranteed delivery times. Public holidays, severe weather and peak periods may cause delays.

What is your returns policy?

Because biltong is a food product and cannot be resold once returned, we do not accept returns for a change of mind.

If your order arrives damaged, incorrect or is not of acceptable quality, please contact us as soon as possible. Include your order number and clear photographs where practical so we can assess the issue promptly.

Please retain the affected product and its packaging until we advise whether it needs to be returned. We will provide an appropriate remedy in accordance with the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993.

This policy does not limit your rights under New Zealand consumer law.

What were the Founders Packs?

Founders Packs were a limited release created for the earliest supporters of Manawatū Biltong. They included a lifetime 5% discount on direct purchases and are no longer available.

The customers who backed those first packs remain an important part of our founding story.

Can I buy in bulk or become a wholesale customer?

Yes. We welcome enquiries from retailers and businesses that share our commitment to quality New Zealand products.

Wholesale supply is selective and subject to production capacity. Please email us with information about your business, location and expected order volumes so we can discuss whether Manawatū Biltong would be the right fit.

How can I contact you?

Email us at manawatubiltong@gmail.com or send us a message through Facebook or Instagram. We aim to respond as promptly as possible.
